AULA DEL MAR
The wealth of flora and fauna that
inhabit the Alboran Se is reflected here in a manner
that is simple for the visitor to view and understand.
The Sea Scorpion, which imitates a rock, the ray, capable
of producing electric shocks, the surprising colours
of the lobster, the bad-tempered homarus gammarus, one
of its close relations, the patience of its tank companion,
the hermit crab, a grouper of immense weight.. all of
these and many more are on display in some 30 tanks
with a capacity of 50,000 litres.
Man and the sea, the marine hospital, the turtle yard
and the exhibition hall are further additions to the
thematic rooms which feature both marine invertebrates
(anemones, sea cucumber, etc.) and vertebrates (turtles,
fish, etc.).
The marine museum is home to a giant squid almost three
metres in length, the enormous skull and vertebrae of
a whale, the jawbone of a four metre tiger shark capture
on Los Toros Beach, Manilva, in July 1997, and a 2.25
metre dorsal fin taken from a fox shark almost five
metres in length caught in the Mediterranean, to mention
just a few of curiosities of the Alboran Sea on display
here. Archaeological remains of amphorae and an exact
reproduction of the bridge of a fishing boat are just
two examples of man’s relationship with his marine
environment, which is explained in detail in the projection
room. Averitable orchard lies waiting to be discovered
beneath the waters of Málaga’s 180 – metre-long
coastline, which links the Strits of Gibraltar with
Cape Gata
