SEA LIFE
The shark reigns over the seas. This
prehistoric survivor bears certain similarities to its
huge reptilian counterpart, notably its teeth. Laid
out in a series of row, they can be regenerated just
like the colossal lizard’s. In fact, a shark may
change its teeth more that a thousands times during
its lifetime and still retain that familiar saw-like
grimace which, in one location on the Costa del Sol.,
when we can find swimming above our very heads.
The place in question is the Shark’s Tunnels,
one of the main attractions at the Sea Life underwater
park. A stroll beneath this glass vault, in the silent
company of several species of shark, including the Great
White, will bring us to a series of tanks of a more
tropical nature. Here, sea horses of the striped, oceanic
and tiger tail varieties provide the more colourful
spectacle. The unique crustacean known as the nautilus
will engage our curiosity with its strange swimming
technique: where is its head? How does it manage to
propel itself with those tentacles?
The rays will win over all who pause to offer them a
morsel of squid, allowing their bellies to be stroked
like the most faithful of dogs. And so it goes on. Tank
after tank, 35 in all, filled with the most stunning
examples of marine life imaginable.
The latest project, Discover Amazonia, showcases the
voracious instincts of the piranha and the profile of
the aptly-named disc fish, both endemic to this region,
the orchard of the planet.
Leisure facilities are also provided in the shape of
a theme-based mini golf course and a terrace on which
visitors can discuss the marvellous encountered during
their visit over a refreshing drink enjoyed in the sunshine
of the Costa del Sol while looking out to the Mediterranean
Sea, the gateway to a secret existence now on display
