SELWO MARINA
Boas, tarantulas, piranhas, alligators…
only the very brave would dare to cross the Amazon jungle.
Some 800 of these tender creatures, covering 50 different
species, have just arrived at Selwo Marina. Two new
rooms known as Amazonia, dedicated exclusively to the
flora and fauna of this intrinsic ecosystem, enable
the visitor to view from behind a pane of glass animals
that in different circumstances could make the hair
or even the boldest spectator stand on end.
The park, which is located next to the Parque de la
Paloma in Benalmadena and covers an area of almost two
hectares, features reproductions of a number of different
habitats.
Immaculate Caribbean beaches ring to pleasant calls
that announce the much awaited arrival of the dolphins,
a must for our aquatic photo album.
Meanwhile, the impatient roars of the sea lions implore
their more acrobatic companions to finish their show,
eager for their own turn to entertain the audience.
Bruno, a sea lion weighing over 300 kilos, is a most
affectionate companion, taking advantage of any momentary
lapses of attention to plant the hairiest of kisses
on visitors’ faces with his enormous snout. And
now, time to take more photos of yet another never-to-be-forgotten
experience: a swim these enormous hairy “seals”,
a practice that has proved enormously successful since
its inception in 2005.
In the Exotic Bird Enclosure, vividly-coloured toucans,
parrots, cockatoos and macaws can be seen riding bicycles,
learning to count and even completing jigsaw puzzles.
On Ice Island, newly-arrived penguins, waddle awkwardly
across the snow beneath an artificial aurora borealis.
Alongside the Magellan, Gentoo and Rockhopper varieties,
the second-largest of all the species of this curious
animal, the spectacular King Penguin, further swells
the ranks of this family of tail-coated creatures in
Andalusia’s only enclosure.
