ZOO
One of the best zoos in the world.
An accolade earned by providing magnificent facilities:
bamboo- shrouded temples, giant trees, dense waterfalls,
mystical caves, suspension bridges…
By creating an exact reproduction of the original habitat
of the tropical forests of Madagascar, Equatorial Africa
and Southeast Asia, where leopards, otters, chimpanzees,
flying foxes (fruit-eating bats with a fox like face)
or meerkats) the animal on which the “Timon”
character in the film “The Lion King” was
based) stamp themselves on the memories of the thousands
of tourists who pour through its gates each year.
One of the best zoos in the world because it has broken
down architectural barriers to offer unrestricted views
and thus encourage interaction between man and beast.
Nowhere is this more evident than in the Madagascar
Forest, guarded by Great Baobab (a 26 metre-high African
tree), where lemurs leap freely all around us. Or in
the “Jungle Clearing” exhibition, in which
over 40 trained animals, including armadillos, peccaries
and racoons, take part.
One of the best zoos in the world because it supports
European Breeding Programmes for species whose survival
is in severe peril. So the Gorilla, Sumatran Tiger,
Chital Dear and Binturong (specie of giant mongoose)
enjoy some respite here from their terrible plight,
repopulation colonies with animals born in captivity.
Romina, a pygmy hippopotamus cub, and Nancy, a baby
gibbon, both born in 2005, are the two newest members
of this veritable Noah’s Ark right here in Fuengirola.
Each step in the zoo is a new adventure. So, you are
advised to replenish your energy at one of the several
theme-based dining areas. After our meal, the creatures
of the night still await us, visible thanks to the enclosure’s
special lighting, which makes it one of only two nocturnal
zoos to be found in the whole world, and the only one
of its kind in Europe.
