La Concepcion - Malaga Gardens

Still in the city itself, though outside the boundaries of its historical centre, stands the largest and best-known collection of flora to be found in the whole province – La Concepción Estate, a varied, almost magical landscape that has been kept in an immaculate state of repair since its creation in 1850. it was the brainchild of Jorge Loring and Maria Amalia Heredia Livermoore, a genteel couple belonging to the oligarchy that held sway in XIX – century Málaga whose collector’s vocation and thirst for culture led to them commissioning the estate.

The style adopted for the purpose was a faithful reflection of the English landscaping tradition of elegant fountains whose waters sprang forth among palm trees, bamboo plants, complemented by period structures such as rockeries and a Neoclassical artefacts amassed by the owners of the estate.

It may have been the idyllic ambience achieved by these botanical gardens that made the estate the most coveted recreational residence of its time, a place in which a new surprise now awaits us at every turn, be it a bird of paradise crossing our path or the seemingly –interminable monkey puzzle which, at 45 metres, stands justifiably proud of its position as the tallest tree in the province.
